Blog for May 1st

Hi All,

Over the weekend, I want you to think about the role of journalism. Is an editorial in a newspaper or magazine credible just because it's in a newspaper or magazine? Why or why not? What does Frank Partsch mean when he says "editorial writers speak for institutions; a blogger speaks for herself. Her online opinion is indistinguishable from a shout in the crowd"? What makes "institutions" superior to a single blogger or a community of bloggers? You DO NOT need to answer all these questions! I just want you to think about blogging versus editorial writing.

Blog Post for Thursday night (4/28)

Hi All,

For your blog post, I want you to think about technology in general (from Facebook to Google to Smartphones) and reflect on whether this technology is moving us in a positive or negative direction. Of course, if you want to post on some other aspect of information technology, go for it!

And remember to reply to two classmates by Thursday night.

Blog prompt for Friday April 22nd; Due Sunday 4/24

Hi All,

You will be wrapping up your essay over the weekend and we will be transitioning from this unit to the next on Tuesday. For this weekend's post, I just want you to reflect on the role of education and access to it. Do you have any final thoughts questions, or comments? Good luck revising and proofreading!

Blog prompt for Tuesday 4/19; due 4/21

The cuts to higher education over the last couple of years has had a huge impact on the students, campuses, and the overall quality of education. While California has traditionally had one of the most prominent and prestigious public university systems, the draconian slashes to funding by the governor and lawmakers in Sacramento has negatively affected this reputation. It would seem that lawmakers are out of touch with the reality of California's post-secondary education system and the financial implications of their decisions.

Your blog, which is due by Thursday night (4/21), is an open letter to Jerry Brown and the lawmakers in Sacramento. Let them know how their decisions are affecting you and your classmates, whether it be increased tuition costs, larger class sizes, or cuts to essential services. Let them know what is happening on the ground in the university and college systems and what you demand of them as voters.

Weekend Blog

I am totally cool with you guys and gals writing on whatever tickles your fancy. But for those of you who need a little food for thought, I want you to think about the right to education, both secondary and post-secondary. Furthermore, do all people have a right to a quality education taught by qualified teachers? How do urban inner city schools deal with this when they have no money to pay good teachers and low test scores?

You assignment to create a new post on your blog by Sunday night. Additionally, I want you to go to the blogs of two of your classmates and respond to their's as well as "following" their blogs. I will have a class list on my blog tomorrow.

Cheers
